The SWHS 9th grade science fair took place on May 30th 2025, during periods 2-4 in the cafe, Hall of Achievement, and lobby.
Students presented their projects on environmental problems and their solutions that they started in the beginning of May. Students were judged by four judges throughout their time there and shared their ideas to help our environment. This opportunity is given by the high school, and allows freshmen to express their creative and innovative ideas. It is an outlet for those who enjoy expressing their intellectual abilities through a creative medium.
A large variety of environmental problems and solutions were shown at the science fair. Students choose something that they were interested in making a difference in.
“My partner and I chose invasive insects because that’s a problem here in Connecticut and felt it was important to make a solution,” freshman Julianna Mayer said.
Judges at the science fair consisted of volunteers, teachers, and students. These judges carefully listened to each student’s project. Seeing these problems and solutions showed judges how students are taking their knowledge and actually applying it to something that could overall help our planet.
“I’m glad to see that these young people are thinking about, and in some cases acting on these problems,” science fair judge and South Windsor community resident Carol Manzella said.
Mrs. Danel Eitel and Ms. April Davis run the science fair, but all teachers play a role in the setup. The science fair has been around for 17 years, with more creativity being brought to the project each year.
“I want students to think they can have an impact on the world,” Eitel said. “I want people to understand how we can come up with solutions.”
Students can take away a lot from this project. Interest could be sparked about further pursuing their topic. This was a great opportunity to show and practice their presentation skills, important in education and in life.
