On Thursday, May 22nd, South Windsor’s annual Senior Outing field trip took place at Holiday Hill in Cheshire, Connecticut. However, the reigning question is, is it relevant anymore?
During the outing, seniors participated in various activities including swimming in pools and lakes, rock climbing, sports games, music and dancing, lunch, and other side activities to stay busy during the day. Last year, the weather for the outing was not ideal due to heavy rain and frigid temperatures, which is similar to how this year’s weather was. This may be one of the reasons why seniors aren’t attending outings, but not the main one.
The majority of the senior class of 2025 did not attend Senior Outing, and only around 60 kids went on the field trip. This could be for a lot of reasons, including cost and weather, but the main reason is that seniors simply don’t want to go. For years it has been an activity seniors look forward to all year, but in the past few years, the numbers of attendees has been on a decline.
Many seniors believe that it is a better use of time to just skip the outing trip and also skip school to have a free day. Considering this year senior skip day was the day after outing, seniors got an extra long weekend by skipping both outing and school last week.
“I didn’t go because I knew a lot of people weren’t going,” senior Maya Jewett told The Prowl.
Proving that outing is just not an exciting event or experience anymore for the senior class.
For the future of the budget for outing, Interest was expressed in letting the senior class decide where to go for a local trip instead of doing the same trip every year would make it more interesting for them, and also make it more of a surprise. This would in turn gain the curiosity of future senior classes to attend and see what the field trip is, instead of already knowing all about it from previous years.
In all, outing is still an opportunity for the senior class to unite, but as interest in the trip dwindles, the unity of the class decreases, increasing the need for change.
