On May 17th, the South Windsor community gathered to celebrate Armed Forces Day, a holiday dedicated to honoring those who have served in the military. This traditional observance, celebrated since the 1950s, fosters support and gratitude for the people who fought for our freedom.
One of the ways the town marked Armed Forces Day was by hosting a fireworks show, inviting residents to come out, relax, and enjoy the display together.
“It is a nice community event for all citizens to gather with friends and family,” said the South Windsor Patriotic Commission in an interview with The Prowl.
In addition to the fireworks, the event featured numerous activities for both children and adults. Attendees enjoyed bounce houses, food trucks, and live performances. The South Windsor Community Band also contributed by playing music for everyone’s enjoyment.

The event also provided an opportunity for younger generations to learn about the true meaning of Armed Forces Day and to gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans and active military members.
“The event offers a chance for younger generations to meet current members of the armed forces and veterans,” the South Windsor Patriotic Commission explained.
This community gathering helps ensure that the holiday’s significance is not forgotten. It encourages residents to continue honoring those who have served and to increase awareness of the contributions and sacrifices made by veterans and active-duty military personnel.
“We honor all that are currently serving as well as veterans,” the South Windsor Patriotic Commission wrote in an email to The Prowl.
The event has become a beloved tradition in South Windsor, drawing families and community members each year to celebrate, learn, and show appreciation.
