From April 24th to May 7th, South Windsor High school hosted their 47th Annual Senior Art Exhibition at the Mary J Etter Public Library, giving seniors an opportunity to display a culmination of their high school art pieces.
Seniors are encouraged to showcase a variety of artifacts for families, friends and the public to view. Along with creating an exposure opportunity for aspiring artists, a selection of seniors are provided with awards for outstanding work.
South Windsor High School senior, Willa Hamelin was provided with an award for 3-D Ceramic and Sculpture. Discovering her love for pottery during Freshman year, Hamelin has developed into an exceptional potter. This award is a testament to her art abilities and the result of her hard work, which resulted in her display of 14 intricate items.
“I feel very proud of myself… it means so much to see how far I’ve come from not knowing how to make a simple cylinder to now being able to make complex and decorative pieces,” Hamelin told The Prowl.
Additionally, SWHS senior Gwen Giard won the 3-D Metals and Textiles award, and Rowan Pott was recognized in 2-D DIY Media.
While Giard is honored to be awarded for her work, she believes the art show was a significant experience for additional reasons.
“Personally, I feel accomplished and excited to share with the community something I’ve loved and worked on since I was little,” Giard said.
The final SWHS student who received an award was senior Alexis Le. Le was recognized for her excellence in 2-D Wet Media, which started out as a hobby and has developed into a passion.
“Winning the category solidified my passion and integrity when it comes to art and I’m happy to know that the passion I had exuded was able to be translated through my work to the judges,” Le explained.
Being the last award announced, Le described the suspense she felt throughout the competition.
“I don’t enter shows or competitive environments often because I don’t make art for that purpose but winning meant a lot to me,” Le commented.
It is recommended for the rising seniors to consider participating in the Senior Art Exhibit during the upcoming year as a way to express their personality, tallents and be further inspired by fellow classmates abilities.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to be inspired, put yourself out there and see your peers in a different light that they may not be able to fully express in a school setting,” Le told The Prowl.
The 47th Senior Art Exhibition was a success for both participants and those who had the opportunity of viewing art pieces from a few talented artists, found right here in South Windsor CT.
