South Windsor’s girls lacrosse team secured a narrow 10-9 win against Avon on May 13 at 4 p.m.
Sophomore defender Abby Harrington credited the team’s collective effort for the victory.
“We were able to win due to all of us working together and putting full effort into every part of the game,” she said.
The game was tight throughout, with players anxious about the possibility of a tie. Despite the pressure, the team’s passion and focus propelled them to a hard-fought win. The game nearly went into overtime because Avon was able to retain posession for an extended period of time, but South Windsor was able to grab back possession in the last 10 seconds of the game.
Assistant Coach Michelle Taveres highlighted the practice focus that contributed to the team’s performance.
“I’d say in practice we worked on making smart passes, not being flat-footed, and taking care of the ball,” Taveres said. “When we put all of that work together in the game, we looked great as a team and fought hard for our win. I couldn’t be happier with their effort and improvement”.
Elise Suffish received the team’s mascot at this game for her incredible ball movement during the game.
With four games scheduled this week and little time for practice, the team’s resilience remains a key strength.
Forward Abby Striker expressed pride in the team’s effort. “I am extremely proud of how hard our team worked, it definitely showed off as we got our win!”
Midfielder Jillian Yelle added, “Yesterday’s game was competitive. We refused to give up and our attack did an incredible job of holding possession to keep us in the lead.”
South Windsor’s girls lacrosse team looks to build on this momentum in their upcoming matches against Ellington away at 4:00.
