The South Windsor Girls Golf team has kicked off the season with a strong 5-2 record, showing their team strength. They’ve had standout performances throughout the season including junior Makayla McGrath shooting a round of 43 during a match.
“Our goal is to continue improving our team scores because, while we have had great individual performances, we’ve yet to put it all together on the same day,” Head Coach Mr. John Garrish told The Prowl. “It’d be great to break 200 in a match this year, which we have only done a handful of times in the past, and we are certainly capable of doing!”
In golf, the goal is to get the lowest score possible, trying to meet par on each hole which usually ranges from 3-5 shots. The players shoot on 9 holes throughout the match. Every time the golf team plays, they have 6 play but only take the scores of the first 5 players are counted in their final score.
In every sport, it’s important to set goals periodically throughout the season for your personal game, and it’s no different in golf.
“This season I’m working on improving the distance of my drives and also working on hitting my hybrid better,” senior Madelyn Testa said.
Senior Paige Lambert hopes in the last few games and practices she can work on getting out of sand traps.
Many players agree that golf is a mental game and being in the right mindset is just as important as the physical aspect and practice. Being a student athlete is often taxing and many find it hard to balance bothe practice sports and school. Lambert explained having days off from practice and games keeps her in balance.
“I would say a nice thing about golf is that we always have Fridays off which allows us to catch up on any work that we need to,” Lamert said. Also, it’s important to utilize every moment of down time during school (like Bobcat Block) to finish any work”.
The girls golf team plays their next game on Wednesday, May 14th at Topstone Golf Course in South Windsor and would appreciate the community’s support.
