Sophomore sensation Carter Cornish is just 15 years old, but has been dominating on the field at attack for the South Windsor Bobcats lacrosse team. He has been a key player in all of the games played so far, averaging at least 2 goals a game, as well as 2 assists. Cornish is one of the only lefties on the team, utilizing his position and unique ability to place the ball whenever he wants.
Everyone on the team respects him and how he’s become an idol for what the younger guys could be. Cornish uses his big body to push through defenders and draw them in. He always has a choice of where to put the ball, whether it’s hitting bar down or a dishout for a slam from a teammate.
Winning has always been what drives Cornish to play so intensely. “My driving factor is mostly wanting to help the team win games by any means possible, whether it is scoring goals or getting assists,” Cornish told The Prowl.
Jalen Canales, one of the senior captains who had five goals in the game against Canton, had a positive reinforcement behind his teammate scoring so many goals. Canales was quite fond of Cornish’s play on Tuesday, saying “He played very very well. Before the game, I was like you better score four goals, and when he got there, I said might as well get 6, and that is exactly what he did”.
Cornish was one of three Bobcats who scored in their 11-3 victory over Ellington on Tuesday, April 8. Junior Mason DeCiantis had one of his own, while Canales scored the other four.
The Ellington game started out on the wrong note with the Knights scoring the first point, but the Bobcats defense did not crumble from a short defeat, as they came back huddled with each other and said to one another “that is just one goal, we have plenty of steam left, and we will stop them at any costs”.
That was when the team had a shift in momentum, led by Isaac Gerber winning the ensuing faceoff. From there, it was off to the races. Geber ran down and passed to Kyle Katzbeck, who swung it to Evan Dunn, and then back to Mason DeCiantis.
DeCiantis split and dodged through one defender, took it back out and ran to the right side with 2 defenders on his hip, before he ripped in the ball to score the first goal, which was soon followed by ten more Bobcat goals.
The ‘Cats never looked back and went on to easily defeat the Knights by a score of 11-3, moving the team to 2-0 on the young season. South Windsor is back in action today, Thursday, April 10, on the road at Southington, looking to pull off an all-time upset over the Black Knights.
