South Windsor Public Schools is hosting a shoe drive from March 17 to April 30. The fundraiser, in partnership with Funds2org, a global social enterprise founded by Wayne Elsey, will benefit several schools, including South Windsor High School. Donations will be determined by the total weight of the collected shoes.
The donated shoes will go to organizations that support micro-entrepreneurs in developing countries. These entrepreneurs will then sell the shoes for various business purposes, creating economic opportunities in their communities.
Donations of gently worn shoes in various sizes and styles are encouraged. Anyone can contribute, and the more donations received, the easier it will be to reach the goal of 10,000 pairs by the deadline. Shoes can be dropped off in collection bins located in front of the cafeteria.
According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, more than 300 million shoes are thrown away each year in the U.S., ending up in landfills where they contribute to waste hazards. Additionally, the manufacturing of shoes generates 1.4 billion global greenhouse gas emissions.
Shoes that end up in landfills can take up to 30-40 years to decompose due to their synthetic materials. It also makes them release harmful chemicals like dyes into the soil and groundwater.
According to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), about 300 million children have never owned a pair of shoes. Therefore, by donating, you are reducing lots of waste.
“[Donating] provides access to necessary footwear, which is essential for health, education, and employment,” head of the PAC leadership at SWHS, DeeAnne Corticelli said.
Donating shoes can significantly help people in need and create long-term benefits for them. By contributing, you’ll also become more aware of your global impact and the importance of supporting others, while helping to meet the needs of your school community.
“Teaching students the importance of giving back and thinking beyond their immediate surroundings,” Corticelli told to The Prowl.
It helps for schools to find money to afford to pay for school trips and student programs. It will help have more interesting things to do in the school and would be easier to pay for the things the School wants to get for the students.
“The drive also encourages a spirit of giving and environmental responsibility in our community,” Corticelli explained.
Donate to the shoe drive to help the Earth around you and support your school, especially in honor of Earth Day. Your contribution not only benefits those in need but also raises awareness about the importance of sustainable practices and reducing waste.
