Mu Alpha Theta, South Windsor High School’s math national honors society, hosted a “pieing” event on Thursday, March 13. The event took place in the lobby immediately after school.
Fundraising took place March 6 – March 12 during lunch waves, with students able to purchase votes for $1 to select a teacher to be pied. Entries for a chance to pie the chosen teacher were also available for $1.
Society members preselected a group of teachers and narrowed the final list to five.
Money raised by students went to supporting the math national honors society, which started up this year. Kaitlyn Roy, the head for events and activities for the club, and Mrs. Singer, the advisor for the club, organized this entertaining event.
“We wanted to do this fundraiser for Pi Day as a way to bring more recognition to math. Because we’re a math honor society, we thought it would be a good way to get students involved with something math related, but also something fun,” junior Kaitlyn Roy said.
At a general meeting for their honors society, they were coming up with ideas for something to do for Pi day. At this meeting, they discussed the idea of “pieing” the principal.

The honors society had many responsibilities to organize this event: talking to teachers, creating sign up sheets and a raffle table, bringing in broadcast, and purchasing supplies.
“I think it’s important for students to find opportunities to engage in school-wide related events as much as possible,” McGinn said. “Participating in more than just showing up in the morning, attending classes, and then going home allows people to feel part of a community.”
