On February 20th, from 2-3pm, South Windsor High School’s very own HOPE (Healthcare Occupation and Professional Education) club, had the honor to invite a guest speaker, Gregory L. Wrubel, who majors in neuroradiology and attended Harvard Medical School, to one of their meetings.
The HOPE club offers a wide variety of opportunities for students who are interested in the healthcare field. One way to give insight into this field of work, having a guest speaker, helps members of the club gain an inside view on what truly goes on behind the scenes.
A neuroradiologist primarily focuses on the nervous system, as well as treating and diagnosing abnormal issues in the human body. In addition to sharing information about neuroradiology, the guest speaker, Wrubel, spoke about his experience in radiology and some information about it as well.
Radiology primarily focuses on treating diseases using technology such as x-rays and ultrasounds. Wrubel expressed this form of work by using photographs to show different aspects of the devices in action.
During Wrubel’s presentation, he shared some of his own career experiences and showed many intriguing facts about his specialized healthcare field. His involvement with neuroradiology for 15 years gave him many teaching and leadership opportunities as well.
Biology teacher, and the advisor for the HOPE club, KC Karasinski, has seen how the appearance of a guest speaker has benefitted the members significantly.
“It gives them a new perspective that they might not have thought about,” Karasinski said. “We’ve had a few different guest speakers, but this was especially cool because it was an actual doctor.”
The incorporation of an insider’s view on neuroradiology, has given students even more information and details regarding the field.
To be specific, many have concluded that the presentation sparked new interests and have gained recognition from others.
Two of these students, Martin Tushe, a 9th grader at SWHS and Satvik Kadappanavar, a 12th grader at SWHS, shared their viewpoints on the presentation.
“The presentation changed my understanding of neuroradiology,” Tushe stated. “I learned the fascinating ways that radiologists read X-rays, and how they are performed.”
The incredible insights from Wrubel helped many of the members of the HOPE club gain a deeper and more in-depth understanding of this interesting healthcare field!
“The presentation taught me that popular fields like neuroscience and radiology have tons of depth when it comes to their applications,” Kadappanavar stated. “Even in super specific intersections of the fields such as neuroradiology, there is an increasing amount of research done every day.”
The key topics that the guest speaker covered led to students gaining new perspectives and crucial details about the captivating, healthcare field, neuroradiology.
