South Windsor’s indoor track team traveled to New Haven, Connecticut on February 10th for the last qualifier at Floyd Little Athletic Center, known among the athletes as Hillhouse. The meet took place at 4:30pm. Only varsity athletes were allowed to compete at this meet. This meet was the athletes last chance to qualify for the state championship.
They competed against schools in different class divisions, like Class S, Class M, Class L and the LL division, which is the largest division. There were 62 schools that the South Windsor indoor team competed against: Manchester, Glastonbury, East Hartford, Bloomfield and many more.
The athletes were looking forward to this meet, and senior hurdler Izabella McKenna explained what her overall season had looked like as she approached this last opportunity to qualify for states.
“I am looking forward to this meet,” McKenna said. “I am a little nervous hoping to run sub 10 seconds for my 55 meters hurdles race. My season has been really good this year. I have had many ups and downs performance wise and pushed through. I have been working really hard to get where I am now.”
Our athletes did great at the meet this past Monday including freshman, Ny’Zae Brown who threw the shot put throwing 23 ‘5 feet placing 19th overall. Juliana Mayer ran a 10.79 for the 55 meter hurdles also placing 19th as the fastest freshman. Freshman Luis Lopez Casimir ran a 7.05 in the 55 meter dash.
“I think I did good at the meet. I was very proud that I passed my PR. I was very happy with my results. It was fun. I met new people, and I made friends,” Brown said.
The meet was filled with some really tough competition but these athletes pushed through and managed to qualify for state championships: Luis Lopez Casimir, Izabella McKenna, Shawn Baidoo, Jaya Pichay, Mallory Mead, Ella Daniele, Kiran Thaker, Zoe Bailey, Rachel Matyschsyk, Sam Binkowski, Will Campbell, Ethan Hunt and Sophia Hollvatska.
For the athletes who are heading to states, good luck from The Prowl, and to those whose season is over, great job on having a fantastic season.
