High school jobs provide students with valuable life skills such as time management, communication, and financial independence. For South Windsor High School students, local employment opportunities allow them to build their resumes, earn money, and gain experiences that prepare them for the future.
Many students have found work at Spare Time Entertainment in Vernon, where they often take on roles as party hosts.
Spare Time offers a variety of job opportunities, but most South Windsor students work as party hosts. This position is ideal for teens with busy schedules, as shifts are short, and the work allows them to earn both wages and tips. Party hosts are responsible for helping organize kids’ bowling and laser tag parties, ensuring that food is served and games run on time.
Senior Ethan Hunt, a party host at Spare Time, explained the benefits of having a job.
“It offers a lot more opportunities, and it gives me more freedom, rather than relying on parental support. It also sets you up for the future with managing your own money,” Hunt said.
In addition to earning money, students develop skills such as communication, professionalism, and teamwork, which are vital for future success. However, the job also comes with challenges, particularly dealing with difficult customers.
“Dealing with rude customers is a challenge, but you learn to disassociate your sense of self-worth from what the customers think of you,” senior Aiden Keegan said.
Despite occasional difficulties, students describe the working environment at Spare Time as friendly and supportive.
South Windsor students have also found employment at Chick-fil-A, where they work as cashiers, food runners, drive-thru attendants, and cleaners. To get hired, students must apply online and participate in group interviews.
The primary motivation for many students is to save money for personal expenses and college, as well as to gain more independence and responsibility.
Balancing school and work can be challenging, but students find ways to manage their time effectively. Many create to-do lists and plan their schedules to prioritize schoolwork alongside their job responsibilities.
Senior McKenna Beaulieu, who works at Chick-fil-A, highlighted the skills she has gained from her job.
“I do think it’s beneficial because it teaches you things you won’t learn in school like communication, responsibility, time management, and many other life skills,” Beaulieu said.
Whether working at Spare Time Entertainment or Chick-fil-A, South Windsor High School students are developing important skills and gaining experiences that will help them in the future. While balancing school and work can be demanding, these jobs offer opportunities for growth and provide a foundation for lifelong success.
