On December 12th, South Windsor High School hosted its music department’s annual band concert. Ms. Angelica Jackson, the band director at South Windsor High School, showed how inspired she is to keep the band program lively in the coming months for competition season.
“My teaching philosophy is around the belief that music is a universal language and is accessible to everyone in the world. It lives within each of us, regardless of age, ability, or background, and is reflected in its presence across all cultures in my classroom,” Jackson told the Prowl.
She fosters a warm and welcoming environment where every student feels valued, which is reinforced by a large poster in the band room that says, “Everyone is welcome here”.
In Jackson’s opinion, music education goes beyond mastering instruments or theory; it creates lifelong skills like collaboration, creativity, and emotional expression. Music is a vital part of humanity; it connects us and enriches our lives.
Mallory Mead, a band member and student at South Windsor High School in the Wind Ensemble section of the band, had positive feelings about the winter concert.
Her favorite band memory is playing in Virginia Beach her freshman year in Wind Ensemble, and being able to enjoy the experience together as a whole group.
“It really made me excited to stay in Wind and has pushed me to keep playing and working hard to keep my first chair in my section,” Mead told The Prowl.
The band is progressively developing into a highly skilled and collaboratively musically talented team.
Under Jackson’s leadership, she sees the band program continuing to grow in size, visibility, and impact within the school community. In just one year, they have already made significant strides with the Symphonic Band program growing in size and the introduction of our newly formed Pep Band program this year. The Pep Band as an example has brought our music beyond the band room and into school events. This has strengthened the band’s presence and connection to the school climate.
Overall, the concert was a success, and brought lots of viewers and music lovers together in order to amplify the impact the band program is having on South Windsor High School and the town as a whole.
