The South Windsor boys basketball team gained a new coach on November 19, 2024. After a long process, and careful consideration, the committee made the decision about who should be the team’s new coach. This committee consisted of the athletic director, David Sytulek, South Windsor High School’s principal, Joseph Leroy, and three members of the boys basketball team.
The interview process started with two rounds of interviews, which included a first round of 7 virtual interviews from a pool of 18 applicants. Following that, three applicants were selected to move forward to the second round of in-person interviews.
As the interview process was completed, the final decision was made. The new boys basketball coach is Donovin Ford-Hayes.
Coach Ford-Hayes has a wide range of achievements and a lot of experience. He brings a new form of development and strategy to the SWHS players.
“Coaching at different levels has taught me how to identify and develop talent, create effective game plans, and build a team culture based on trust and accountability,” Coach Ford-Hayes said.
In 2019, Ford-Hayes founded the Hartford Shockers, a minor league basketball team, where his goal was to help inspiring athletes reach their goals through teamwork and accountability. Ford-Hayes also founded the Shockers Basketball Academy, which focuses on delivering a ¨world-class championship experience to the community.”
“I realized I wanted to stay connected to the sport by mentoring young athletes. I’ve had the privilege of coaching at various levels, including at Newbury College, Branford Christian Academy, The Bancroft School, and with the Shockers AAU program. These roles have given me the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for the game while helping players develop both on and off the court,” Ford-Hayes explained.
Not only is Ford-Hayes a committed basketball coach, but he also has years of experience as a basketball player. He played for Windsor Locks High School from 2007 to 2011 as a dedicated varsity player. He then continued to play at Becker College from 2011 to 2015, where he contributed to Becker College winning the NECC championship.
“I thought this candidate had a lot of good experience coaching as he owns an AAU program. I think the team will definitely be eager to start practicing to see what he has to bring to the team and help build our culture,” member of the basketball team, senior Ethan Burke said.
The South Windsor community is excited to see how the new coach will impact the team. The team is impressed with Mr, Ford-Hayes´ knowledge of the game and hopes his position as the coach will open new doors and opportunities for this upcoming season.
Ford-Hayes discussed his vision for the program.
“My vision is to create a program that emphasizes hard work, discipline, and team unity. I want to build a culture where players take pride in representing South Windsor High School, both on and off the court,” Ford-Hayes said.
And, while there is a cohesive plan for both, Coach Ford-Hayes detailed what this looks like for each.
“On the court, my goal is to develop fundamentally sound players who play with intensity, intelligence, and a commitment to teamwork. Off the court, I want to help these young men develop leadership skills, strong character, and a sense of responsibility. Ultimately, I want the program to be a source of pride for the school and the community, known for its competitiveness and the development of well-rounded student-athletes,” Ford-Hayes told The Prowl.
But these goals aren’t just for on the court, off the court, his primary goal is to foster a competitive team that improves every day.
“I want us to focus on fundamentals, execution, and building a strong team identity. I aim for the team to play with discipline and effort, regardless of the outcome of games. Off the court, my focus is on academic success, character development, and community involvement. I want my players to excel in the classroom, take responsibility for their actions, and grow into leaders within the school and community” Ford-Hayes explained.
By balancing these goals, Ford-Hayes believes the Bobcats can have a successful and meaningful season.
The Bobcat’s first game of the season is Tuesday, December 17th at Plainville.
