On Thursday, October 31st, the teachers at South Windsor High School participated in their annual teacher department Halloween costume contest. The winner of this year was the math department.
The contest has been going on for at least 14 years, but it was officially made a contest last year.
English teacher Amanda Howard sees a rivalry between the English and Math departments. This year, the English department dressed up as Inside Out characters, and the math department dressed up as Mario Kart characters.
“I think we’re always really trying to outdo each other,” Howard said.
Coming up with ideas and making the costumes is always a process. There are always a lot of decisions before the final costume is set.
The English department wanted to create a timely connection to school topics, deciding that characters from Inside Out would be a perfect fit for lessons on the mood meter and the focus on social and emotional learning at South Windsor High School.
The math department chose Mario Kart characters to involve as many teachers as possible. With the large cast of characters in the Mario Kart series, it was the perfect fit.
The making of the costumes takes a lot of creativity. And it all depends on the teacher how much effort they put into it. Some math teachers actually created cardboard cutouts of karts. While English teachers took the time to buy wigs in order to complete their costumes.
Sadly, not every department participates in the costumes contest. But every teacher makes sure they wear something festive for Halloween. Math teacher Mrs. Cara Singer who dressed up as Waluigi was able to share her thoughts.
“Not all departments participate-but we just love enjoying each other’s costumes all day,” Singer said.
Overall, the annual Halloween costume contest will continue next year, and the students can’t wait to see what their favorite teachers will dress up as, next Halloween.
