Traffic violations are common in South Windsor, but are not always addressed. Recently, attention has been brought to specific areas of South Windsor where these issues impact residents more heavily, particularly areas where the youth reside.
In the article, “Speeding in South Windsor” Bobcat Prowl reporters described the irresponsible driving in the areas surrounding South Windsor High School. The Prowl reported, “Drivers tend to break the speed limit on a regular basis, especially new drivers, who are often stereotyped as reckless.”
This article was released on a town Facebook page, where many residents engaged in conversations regarding traffic violations, and possible solutions.
Members of the South Windsor CT Message Board Facebook group commented on the constant speeding in areas such as Avery Street and Kelly Road, typically from young drivers. Many residents explained that raising the speed limit in areas with heavier traffic would lower the desire for drivers to disobey the speed limit.
In addition, many called for an amendment to the police fund, suggesting that a portion of the Student Parking Fines at South Windsor High School be given to the SWPD. This would allow an increase in officer availability and prevent traffic issues throughout the town.
South Windsor High School juniors, Elizabeth Sinclair and Samiksha Mahenwaran released a petition discussing safety issues near the high school, where new drivers spend most of their time. The petition pushed for new precautions to combat unsafe driving. The students attempted to implement sidewalks on Ayers Rd, a street many students utilize daily to walk to school.
Editor Elizabeth Sinclair, expressed the student and teacher opinions on this issue through her article, “A Safe Place to Walk.” A consensus was formed, “the safety of South Windsor’s students and residents should no longer be overlooked.”
In an interview with The Bobcat Prowl, Sinclair commented on the importance of these sidewalks, elaborating on the possible threats of unsafe drivers.
“There can be faults with drivers, such as speeding, distractions, and leading to more dangers on the road, especially when a student is standing right next to the vehicle. Sidewalks would create additional safety precautions,” Sinclair explained.
Sidewalks would be an effective way of separating pedestrians from those on the road, limiting accidents.
SWHS is not the only area in South Windsor densely populated with youth. The town is largely made up of families who reside in various neighborhoods, many of which do not contain sidewalks, or strictly enforced traffic laws, posing a threat to children.
Mahenwaran explained the relevance of her petition and the daily impact this issue has on residents.
“This is an issue that truly does affect the whole town, especially considering the fact that South Windsor is a very family-friendly area. Blind spots and accidents can happen anywhere and it’s very important to take precautions such as installing sidewalks in high-risk areas,” Mahenwaran told The Prowl.
Safety is an important factor in South Windsor Resident’s daily lives and will continue to be discussed until a solution is found.
