On October 28, South Windsor High School seniors were given the opportunity to be able to attend a free college tour at the University of Connecticut. This was the first time SWHS ran this tour.
The tour was designed to give students who haven’t yet visited campus a chance to walk the grounds and allowed South Windsor High School seniors to see if the University of Connecticut would be a good fit for them. Students were able to explore the campus and walk through an authentic everyday life of a UConn student.
“The purpose was to help our seniors who may still be undecided about applying to UConn to give them a sense of the college,” SWHS counselor Dina Kelleher said.
The tour was led by a current UConn student, who worked for admissions as a tour guide, and it lasted 70 minutes.
Twenty five SWHS seniors took advantage of this opportunity, as exploring all options is essential to finding a school that meets each student’s needs.
Senior, Sneh Detroja was able to take time out of her school day to attend the tour.
“I wanted to see if UConn was a good fit for me,” Detroja said.
The students explored various classrooms, dorms, the official on campus UConn store, and they were able to immerse themselves in the many college students walking around the campus in order to be able to really view the atmosphere of UConn.
Students had the chance to visit one of UConn’s dining halls, where they enjoyed meals they purchased on-site.
Senior Ethan Hunt, who attended the tour, shared his thoughts on the experience.
“I loved the campus. I just think it would have been cool to see a class in action, but a big tour group would probably be a distraction so I understand why we didn’t,” Hunt stated.
Overall, most seniors of South Windsor High school found this free opportunity to attend a tour at UConn very helpful and beneficial, as it helped paint a picture of everyday college life.
