South Windsor High School offers a large variety of clubs to meet the needs of every student. No matter what your interests are, there is a club for you. Whether that interest is art, music, games or participating in community service, there is a place for you to join in at SWHS.
One thing offered here at SWHS, is the opportunity to create your own club.To start a new club, students must first find a staff member willing to be their advisor and get their club approved. Once approved, the new club is added to the expansive list of offerings.
Last school year, sophomore Dhanya Sanakkayala created a new club called the Vision Club. This club is a career exploration club that gives students the opportunity to meet with professionals in careers they might be interested in, and provides them with information about what the educational experience is like in that field.
This club has a leadership board that is student led and student run. Alongside Dhanya, are sophomores Vice President Alveena Suha, and Secretaries Levina Jerald and Disha Hosamani.
Sanakkayala says she started the club because she was unsure of what she wanted to do after high school and felt that other students might feel the same way.
“I started this club last year as I was someone who had absolutely no idea of what I wanted to do,” Sanakkayala stated.
She believes that textbooks and online articles only get you so far, and that hearing from people in different career fields gives you a first hand perspective on what it’s really like.
Speakers are brought in to give first hand experience and knowledge on their career field.
“Vision stands out when compared to other clubs because we regularly bring in guest speakers for students to speak to and learn from,” Sanakkayala commented.
This gives students the opportunity to have one-on-one, direct interaction with experts in their field.
Students are able to ask questions and engage in conversations about a topic that interests them.
Club advisor and SWHS math teacher, Mrs. Singer, shares equal excitement about Vision.
“This club fills the void of students unsure of careers, and allows students to hear from various professionals and really take a closer look at some specific careers,” Singer explained.
As the club advisor, Singer lets the students choose the direction in which they want the club to go.
“They do most of the work and have wonderful ideas. I give input and make recommendations, but mainly, I support the club leaders in all they are doing to bring in professionals,” Singer said.
This is the first career exploration club that SWHS has had, and luckily Vision has already started up again for the 24-25 school year! If you missed the first meeting don’t worry because it is never too late to join.
Vision Club’s next meeting will be October 30th, at 2:00pm and Senator Anwar will be visiting to talk about his careers in medicine and government.
