Tucked away in the basement of the SWHS building, Room 10 holds all the cameras and computers for editing pictures. It is the hub of creativity for the Photography Club.
Jessica Tyler, the Photography Club and photography class teacher, has been taking pictures for about 10 years. In her free time, you might find Tyler playing sports, drawing, wood working or taking pictures. In addition to the Photography Club, Tyler also oversees FLSA, Wood-working Club and Robotics.
Tyler has always loved taking photos. Her nana and grandpa had photo albums that they’d love to look through growing up, even with those quick snap film cameras. In college, Tyler took a photography course where she learned how to use the DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera, and then she just loved practicing taking photos. She went to Central Connecticut State University and then got her Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies.
A few of Tyler’s students created the Photography Club last year. It developed further when more students from Tyler’s classes became interested in practicing their skills and decided to join.
“…We’re gonna try to figure out what people want to explore so it could be creative, do photos creativity, or if they wanna more of sports photography, or if they haven’t used a DSLR camera before, just kind of learn how to use a professional camera and learn how to develop skills like that…” Tyler said in an interview with The Prowl..
In photography class, students go outside and look around the school to take pictures. Tyler is planning to replicate this in the Photography Club.
One of the most interesting things that Tyler teaches in her class is how to use a DSLR camera.
The founders of the club are seniors Anushree Sabade and Riya Modi. They founded the club last year in 2023. Initially starting with 5-10 the club has grown to over 30.
“A lot of the things we do in the club is teaching techniques and using Adobe Photoshop. The students were able to grasp skills quickly,” Sabade said.
Sabade has a passion for photography and has often spent her time taking pictures of various objects and exploring nature photography. She plans to continue photography in college.
“I wanted to apply my skills and passion to teach others,” Sabade explained.
Photography Club is a place where students can show off some of their skills, learn how to use a DSLR camera and have fun with friends as they take pictures to document the memories they make along the way. Whoever has an interest in art and creativity and like capturing their interests should seek out membership.
The club meets bi-weekly on Thursdays in room 10.
