This year’s annual Porter Hill Pumpkin Roll was held on October 4th from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. As in previous years, the South Windsor Parks and Recreation Department hosted the event, which was open to all town residents. People of many ages joined together for the event, which gave families time to spend quality time together as the busy school year has started.
A large crowd gathered as the weather on this beautiful October evening was quintessentially fall.
Leading up to the event lots of preparation was involved.
“We had to coordinate with food trucks to provide food; we had to gather pumpkins from various places in the town, and we had to spray paint the hill,” a volunteer at the event commented.
The event provided pumpkins for residents who didn’t bring their own.
There were two food trucks present providing food and drinks, one of them being a Kona Ice Truck, a familiar sight at many town events. One of the sponsors of the event was the Russian School of Mathematics in Vernon.
There were different heats for both children and adults, each offering various prizes for the winner. It was evident from their smiles that children had a lot of fun with the friendly competition.
“Gift cards included places like IHOP, Starbucks, and Panera. The winner is decided by whose pumpkin rolled the furthest, but there are challenges later in the day that you can also win prizes for,” a Parks and Rec representative told The Prowl on Saturday.
“It was fun to see my family and friends on a day that we didn’t have school,” a participant explained.
The Parks and Rec Department hopes to continue hosting this event for South Windsor residents for many years to come.
