On Friday, September 20, the South Windsor varsity volleyball team took on Manchester at home. The ‘Cats took a clean sweep over Manchester, winning 3-0. South Windsor wraps up that game with a record of 5-3.
The first set of the game started very strong with a powerful offense and a “dig or die attitude,” junior London Bascomb commented.
Senior Sharon Iweka worked well with her teammates and played smoothly with minimal errors, getting South Windsor off to a strong start.
“I stayed calm and trusted that my teammates knew we were going to be able to work together and stay on top,” Iweka explained.
Seniors Renee Gough and Kaitlyn Bullock went on multiple serving runs strengthening the lead.
During the middle of the game, the Bobcats struggled to communicate with each other, but after faltering in the middle, they were able to come back stronger and win.
Cheering on the South Windsor team, junior Mason Deciantis saw a competitive game unfold.
“They were struggling in the middle but finished strong,” Deciantis said.
In the second set, the team struggled with their defense. However, after losing some points and taking a time-out, the ‘Cats did a hard reset to come back onto the court stronger than ever.
“We took the extra time we were given to communicate as a team and talk about what needs to be fixed. We came back onto the court and did what we had to do,” junior Kailie Girard told The Prowl.
In the third set, they had a stronger start and pushed through to finish the game. Girard focused and trusted her team and was able to earn the extra point. She made sure to maintain her concentration during serve receive in order to get the ball to Bullock.
Defensive players, seniors Leilene Garcia and Jennie Norzeron concentrated on perfecting their passes in order to side out.
The team will face Newington on Wednesday, September 25 at South Windsor High School.
