The South Windsor High School boys tennis team hosted its annual tennis tournament on Saturday, September 14th. This event was held in collaboration with the Recreation Department, and all proceeds went towards the Hartford Bags of Love non-profit organization.
¨Our passions are an outlet to give back to the community,” tournament organizer, Roger Mao, told The Prowl.
Hartford Bags of Love was started by a current senior in South Windsor High School, Tiernan Cabot at nine years old. The Hartford Bags of Love is committed to ending homelessness as a non-profit organization.
The tournament also serves as a social event for any new or returning high school tennis players.
¨The tournament is a great way to meet the tennis players who already made the team and it’s also all for charity. You can have fun while also playing with new people,¨ said Sreejan Selvamohan, a player on the boy’s tennis team.
The hard work and effort that was put into the background of this event is enormous, considering how hard it was to get this event running.
¨I am so proud of the boys Roger Mao, Jerry Zhu, and Mukhil Olinlivan, in getting it off the ground. A tremendous amount of work had to be put in, working with Park’s and Rec, insurance for liability and trophies, and just the whole thing,” the coach of the team, Casey Tyler said.
According to Tyler, the team had some struggles with obtaining insurance liability but was extremely resilient throughout the entire situation.
Hartford Bags of Love holds other events as well. They have distributed small pantries across towns in Connecticut providing free food for those in need. Hartford Bags of Love also hosts “Sleep Out”, an event to hear stories from people who were previously homeless or are currently homeless.
The support that the tennis team is giving to this organization is admirable. With the people of the South Windsor community coming to this event, major support is given to the cause of homelessness.
