On Friday, September 12, the SWHS Freshman Football team took on Bristol Central. Unfortunately, the ‘Cats came up short with a loss of 18-28.
The Bobcats put up a tough fight, with 3 touchdowns scored each by Fahd Faris, Dash Hayes, and Luca Cavalieri, but were outplayed by Bristol Central’s special teams and defense.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Bobcats successfully protected their quarterback and routinely stayed on their blocks, allowing the team’s running backs to follow through and earn yards.
“We were doing terrible in the first half, but then in the second half everyone started turning up, we had a lot of big stops in the second half. If we played as well as we did near the end of the game then we would have won the game no doubt about it,” freshman Fahd Faris told The Prowl.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bobcats performed well while containing the inside, but the Rams tended to run the ball outside on most plays, which was a key component to the loss.
However, during halftime, the Bobcats figured out how to solve their problems, and resisted most pushes from the Ram’s offense.
“They tried running up the middle a couple of times but got stuffed, so they started running to the outside. after halftime, we noticed they were doing that almost every play so we changed our defense and started making some tough stops,” freshman Derek Cavalieri commented.
Defensive leaders, Derek Cavalieri, Logan Serrao, and Danny Rivera, helped the team stop potential points for Bristol Central and had some big hits.
Although they lost the first game of the season, the freshman ‘Cats are getting better by the second, and are looking to bounce back this week against Hartford Public. The team has high expectations for their future and refuses to let one loss affect the rest of their season.
