Throughout the summer, the same recurring question was brought up: who will be the boys varsity soccer assistant coach? This question was answered when Mr. Jeffery Russell was deemed assistant coach on August 19th, 2024.
The varsity team never had an official assistant coach. Most of the time, the junior varsity head coach, Mr. Ryan Kaufman, would help out with the varsity team; he has now picked up the role of being the head coach of the girls varsity soccer team.
Coach Kaufman is still invested in the boys program, and has been known to make short appearances with the boys team from time to time, just to check in.
Coach Russell has many years of experience in coaching soccer from all different levels. Previously, Russell has coached two seasons at Wethersfield High coaching girls junior varsity soccer.
Not only has Russell played soccer throughout his childhood, but was also a four year varsity starter for the football program. Russell, therefore, is a consummate athlete and experienced in other sports.
Russell decided to take the position because he lives in South Windsor and is very involved with the soccer community. He also coaches a youth team with Head Coach Peter Lepak. Russell is excited to be immersed in the South Windsor community more now that he has become the varsity assistant coach.
“Jeff really came into the season strong. He had an immediate and impressive first impression with the team,” junior mid-fielder Jaxson Hills stated.
Russell has made a major impact on the players. He has also been very confident in his coaching ability with the team. Russell will never put any players down. His coaching style is to give them tips and great advice to become a better player and team overall.
“Ultimately, I’m excited to be part of their journey and to help them reach their full potential this season,” Russell told The Prowl.
The boys varsity soccer team plays their next game September 12th away against Simsbury.
