During the week of September 2nd, all students in grades 9-12 had a grade-level assembly. These assemblies are new to South Windsor High School and will be occurring once a month until the end of the year.
Now that Principal Joseph Leroy is leading the South Windsor High School administration, many changes have been made in hopes of making the high school feel more like a community. Work ethic and positivity are the main focus during the 24-25 school year.
Each assembly was slightly different due to isolated events happening in individual grades. However, common themes were shared throughout all assemblies.
Cell phone usage is a prominent topic in high school, and for the first time, a school-wide cell phone restriction policy was implemented. During the assembly, it was reinforced that cell phones are expected to be put away from bell to bell while classes are in session.
The importance of engagement was spoken of during these presentations, along with information regarding student resources and where to locate them thoroughout the building.
With the many changes come student opinions. While some students felt the assemblies were unhelpful and repetitive, many found them to be beneficial due to the important information that was shared.
“The assembly was very helpful because it told me things that were happening in the school that I might not known otherwise,” junior Jillian Yelle told The Prowl.
For juniors, events like prom and homecoming, and information regarding parking in the student lots, were topics that were touched upon during the first assembly of the year. Students are eager to learn more about these events as are fast approaching.
“It’s helpful to getting information out to students in a timely manner,” junior Lily Hamilton commented.
Yelle believes that the assembly has left a positive impact on her grade and hopes that in the future there will be “more topics for students to converse on.”
Student voice is very important at SWHS, and many students hope within the next few assemblies, students will get a chance to speak on controversial topics.
These assemblies were an information-packed way to kick off the new school year and will continue throughout the school year.
