On Friday, September 6th, the seniors of South Windsor High School participated in the annual rock signing at the back of the building. This event brings the whole senior class together as one.
The rock signing has been a tradition at the school for a long time, and many students look forward to it throughout their time as underclassmen.
Throughout lunch, seniors made their way to the back of the building, where the rock signing took place.
As seniors lined up to sign their names on the rock, there was excitement in the air. Senior Nihaal Thakran explained, ‘This event gives seniors a sense of pride.’
“Signing the rock really just gives me, and everyone else too, that feeling that as we made it, we’re finally seniors, and it feels weird but at the same time feels good too,” Thakran stated.
Along with the rock, seniors signed a large white canvas that resides inside the school building, earlier in the year. This is another tradition that has been associated with the senior class for many years. The canvas is hung on the wall outside the doors of the cafeteria, for all SWHS staff and students to view.
The rock signing holds a deeper meaning for the senior class. It is a symbol of achievement and the marking of a milestone for these students.
“For rock signing specifically, I think being able to showcase and display every one of the class of 25’s hard work and dedication to get to where we are now is super rewarding,” senior, Greta Lewis told The Prowl.
Seniors had the opportunity to sign the rock in different colors, fonts, and sizes. This shows the diversity and uniqueness of each senior and makes the experience more fun for everyone.
“My friends and I all signed our name next to each other as a tribute to our high school friend group,” Lewis commented.
Two rocks remain in the back of the high school, which are now decorated with numerous senior signatures.
These rocks will stay there for the rest of the year until the next senior class participates in the tradition. The underclassmen wait for the day that they sign the rock, as that symbolizes the home stretch of their high school career.
