As school rolls back into session, chemistry teacher Casey Tyler takes his chemistry students outside for the first lab of the year and flies a drone.
Tyler has been teaching Chemistry at South Windsor High School for the past 8 years, and has continued to keep his curriculum fresh and entertaining for his students.
Being able to keep a class of full upperclassmen engaged in today’s school system can be difficult at times, so incorporating exciting activities is essential.
Over the past few years, Tyler has taken his classes outside in the first few days of school to introduce them to chemistry. He exposes them to exciting labs that they can participate in later in the year.
Not only does Tyler show his students how to fly the drone, but he hands the controller to any student that wants to fly it by themselves.
¨We go outside to let the students see the reaction of substances chemically reacting. We film the reaction and take pictures for the open house, as well as giving some drone flying lessons¨ Tyler told The Prowl.
When Tyler was in the students’ seat back in 1983 learning about chemistry, he didn’t fully understand the concept of substances creating new substances. Tyler takes this into perspective when teaching students and tries to make it easier for them to understand the lesson.
“I want to get across the fundamentals of chemistry and want the students to know what it’s all about,” Tyler told The Prowl.
Past students of his who did the same experiment say it excites them for the rest of the year and is a great introduction to the basics of chemistry.
