The South Windsor High School football team took their annual trip to Camp Nett down in Niantic from August 30th -September 1st.
The seniors were in their third consecutive year of camp, so they were prepared for the physical and mental struggle they were about to endure. Some could call this camp the hardest opponent they face.
But for some, this was their first time at camp, like senior Aderes Darling.
“People were telling me it was going to be very stressful when we first got here, but it made me break through a certain realization that it’s all just mental, so I’m here, and the whole team is here, and we’re gonna ride through,” Darling stated.
Camp Nett is a place where one’s discipline must be the highest it has ever been. The first hour at Camp Nett is notorious.
The players took part in rigorous workouts led by the Army sergeants. The team bear crawled across the field, carried a log, and jogged a mile down to the beach with that log in order to push players to be mentally stronger for this upcoming football season.
The first hour of camp was a tougher experience for the sophomores, who were experiencing the strict environment for the first time.
“It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s a team effort,” sophomore Sam Binkowski told The Prowl.
“It’s definitely harder than I thought it was going to be. I definitely underestimated it a little bit, but I am really enjoying the way the army people are pushing us to work harder, gotta stay motivated,” sophomore Chris Dellafera stated.
One of the most important purposes that camp serves is to bring the team closer together. All the players suffering together gives them a sense of family, and senior captain Ethan Burke agreed.
“I have talked to some people that I’ve never talked to before, so yeah,” Burke stated.
The players went through what some would call a life changing experience that not many other teams went through. Hopefully the Bobcats can use this experience to do well this year, and make another playoff appearance.
