On Tuesday, September 3rd, South Windsor High School’s Girls Varsity Soccer team battled against E.O. Smith for their season-opening game. The girls had long awaited their first game after the grueling preparation the team put in during the preseason and a few official practices.
This year’s squad’s hard work was rewarded as they beat E.O. Smith 2-0.
The Lady Bobcats have officially chosen their 3 captains for this 24’ season. Congratulations to junior Samantha Roux, senior Ava Hapkiewicz, and senior Lilah Cabahug for being nominated and elected as South Windsor Girls Soccer’s leaders.
These three players have proven their worth on the field through their skills and shown their capability of mentally lifting the group. They bring a combination of fun and focus to the field, which pushes the team’s effort and productivity during practices.
When asked how she and her fellow captains prepare the team before a game, Hapkiewicz says, “I think staying positive and trying to get everyone excited for the game is what gets us motivated and focused on our goals.”
The game began with high intensity and tension between both teams. This was an important game for the squad as they unfortunately lost against E.O. Smith 1-6 last season. This win displays the program’s progress and development as a team.
The player of the game, junior, Erin Martin, stated, “Especially since we lost to E.O. Smith last year, we wanted to come back and keep the intensity up.”
The two goal scorers of the game were junior Samantha Roux and freshman Kylah Wood. Both girls had an amazing game and were able to finish skillfully, resulting in two valuable goals.
Captain Roux states, “I think we played well because of the team chemistry we have this year and the skill and talent of the players on the team.”
The Lady Bobcats were pleased with their performance against E.O. Smith and look forward to their next game against William H. Hall High School, on September 9th.
