Starting only this year, the SWHS Cricket Club has encouraged many students, excited and passionate about the sport of cricket, to play with their friends and classmates. The founders of the club, Sohan Patro, Daksh Singh, and Harshiv Sohagiya have made tremendous efforts to make cricket available to the school community.

“I started it because I wanted to play cricket and help spread the sport across the school, so we can play more cricket,” Patro said.

The first meeting of this club amassed roughly 20 students and, so far this year, the club has played three games against Glastonbury, winning all of them. Cricket has become increasingly popular, and this growth in popularity will continue, as the club will be operating once again in the 2024-2025 school year.

“I really like playing cricket in the cricket club this year,” freshman Rishi Murali commented. “It is an excellent source of exercise, fun, and entertainment. What I like most about it is that it’s a team-building exercise, and I’m looking forward to playing next year.”

Along with the cricket club members, their club advisor, Mr. Ly, was beyond proud of their accomplishments, considering they only started during the team this year. Through this club, Ly gained insight into the sport of cricket, which he has grown to enjoy watching and playing.

I have played soccer for 27 years, and now for the next 27 years, I think I might be playing cricket!

“Through this club and my students, cricket has grown on me,” Ly explained. “I recently started watching the bigger tournaments, and I really enjoy them. As for this year, our cricket club won a tournament, for which we received a trophy, and we’ve practiced a lot at Wapping Field for this tournament.”

This year was a tremendous success for SWHS’s Cricket Club, and, next year, they have ambitious plans to expand the club itself.

“As for next year, we plan to hold tournaments with towns such as Rocky Hill, Glastonbury, and Farmington, really taking it to the next level,” Ly told The Prowl. “I hope we get more members in our club too, so we can compete in the bigger cricket tournaments here in Connecticut.”

The cricket club’s achievements have been remarkable, and their enthusiasm for the sport is contagious. With their dedication and Mr. With Ly’s guidance, the club is poised for even greater success in the upcoming year, fostering a love for cricket and promoting teamwork and sportsmanship among its members.
