In a place like South Windsor High School with so many clubs and opportunities, becoming a part of the community can be overwhelming. South Windsor High School’s Clay Club is a welcoming environment, open to all students looking for opportunities to practice their art skills.
The club meets on Thursdays each week in room 6 after school until 3:00 pm. The Clay Club is open to students of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Individual accommodations are made for each student, according to their skill levels and interests.
Many students who are involved in the club have taken clay work classes during their high school career. The club serves as an opportunity for these students to further their skills and continue pursuing their passion for clay work.
“We accept anyone; several students come when they have [taken] the class, and many students come after they have taken the class,” club advisor, Ms. Lane, told The Prowl.
New students learn the art of clay work from their peers and the class advisor. The students are instructed in how to use a potter’s wheel, wedge the clay, and glaze their work.
“I have some students [who] have no experience and come with their friends, [and] learn from each other as they work,” said Lane.
The club explores multiple areas of clay work from making sculptures to throwing a bowl. In addition, students practice their glazing techniques, adding special details to their new creations.
“I let the students do what they are interested in, so sometimes they are pinching sculptures or little pots and sometimes they are trying the potter’s wheel,” explained Lane
Any students looking for a club to add to their after-school schedule and list of extracurriculars should consider joining the Clay Club. From relieving stress to building connections within the school community, joining this club benefit students in various ways.
