Princess Diana: an iconic public figure in the 80s and 90s, her courageous fashion efforts still trending in 2021, and likely to stick around for the upcoming year. In fact, many recent films and shows explaining her story, including the new biography film “Spencer,” starring Kristen Stewart.

Many people refer to these repeating trends as the “Diana Effect,” because even 20 years after her death, she stays prominent in pop-culture. “She is stepping into that same sort of space as an Audrey Hepburn or Jackie Kennedy, a fashion icon whose style is so emulated and so loved, really.’” Says Eleni Lynn, curator of the biographical film Diana, and her fashion story,“‘We see her growing in confidence throughout her life, increasingly taking control of how she was represented.’”

Lynn also pointed out in an article for Vanity Fair Diana embodied independence and originality through her clothing – it was her main way of communicating with the public. It started off with modest sweater vests and long skirts.

Her style soon transitioned into what makes her so memorable today. Through her difficult marriage and livelihood, Diana sent out a meaningful message that she is strong, liberated, and self-reliant; her iconic black revenge dress being a prime example. She debuts this dress the day after finding out that her husband was being unfaithful.

Many celebrities have internalized this message, like Harry Styles, who breaks gender and societal barriers with his clothing. Little do you know, many of his looks are directly inspired by the iconic princess.

“‘Diana was ahead of her time. She perfected the art of mixing high and low and blurred the lines between menswear and womenswear. In a weird way, she was doing streetwear before streetwear was a thing.’” Stated Jack Carlson, creative director of fashion brand Rowing Blazer, a brand inspired by many of Spencer’s looks.

While the media and royal family may have portrayed her negatively, she persevered through her divorce like a goddess. Not only did she break royal norms through her courageous humanitarian efforts, but also through her bold and beautiful fashion efforts. The princess was an inspiration for all.
