The South Windsor Girls Freshman Volleyball Team were invited to play at the Southington Freshman Tournament for the first time in years, on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
The girls got on the bus at 7:00am to be at their first game against Newtown at 8:30. It took an hour to arrive and the team headed straight for the back of the gym to warm up.
During the first 40 minute game against Newtown, South Windsor played 2 sets and won both 25-8. The freshman team then got a 40 minute break and were able to watch Darien and Newtown play before the next game.
Their next game was against Darien where they played almost 2 sets before the time ran out. The Bobcats won the first set 25-20 and started the second set, but were not able to finish.
The 3rd game was against Glastonbury who have played The Bobcats two times in regular season and have lost both times. The freshman team won both sets 25-13.
With an unfortunate loss to Fitch 19-25, the team headed off to a lunch break before the afternoon session.
The Prowl asked Coach Keith Raczkowski how he thought the girls improved this season. “Our serving has gotten better throughout the year and they have become the best freshman serving team from the past 7 years. Their communication on the court has improved as well as their teamwork” Raczkowski said.
Coach Raczkowski met with the judges and other coaches during lunch to find out South’s scoring for the morning. The Freshman team got 3rd place in the morning session and were moving on to the afternoon to play Darien again.
With another win against Darien 25-15, only playing one set, the girls moved onto the semifinals to play against Southington, and Fitch playing East Lyme.
Unfortunately, the freshman team played their first game of the season against Southington and lost. As the game started, it was close and, for some of the game tied, but Southington came out on top and won 15-25 after the first set.
Coach Raczkowski was also asked how he thought the girls did transitioning from playing one team to another.
“Yes, there were teams with some of the best programs in the state that were invited. Some had different styles of playing but we adapted well. We weren’t quite sure what to expect but we rose to the level we needed to” Raczkowski commented.
The freshman girls volleyball team left the tournament 3rd overall and with a serving percentage of 88.4% making 78 out of 91 serves.
With 14 wins and only 2 losses, the girls are pleased with their determination and development throughout their first season with South Windsor High School.
